1920s Radiofors Violet Wand
Beautifully built and super rare
Many (most!) of the violet wand/ray devices from early in the twentieth century were "mass" produced by small specialist companies by piece workers (dare I say it..) in less than ideal conditions. A great many of these machines were produced for the burgeoning "home therapy" markets, as well as for medical professionals of various types. As such, many were not particularly well made, and that has shown over time by the machines that have survived a century in working or repairable condition.
There was another much smaller market - aimed almost entirely as far as we can understand it at medical professionals. These machines needed to be more robust to stand up to much more use (obviously) and were beautifully made electrically - with large robust coils and much better build quality.
Many of these machines were reasonably bespoke, and numbers made were in the hundreds, not the thousands like the machines mentioned above. As such, they are rarely seen these days, and often not recognised for what they are, or mistaken for much lower quality English machines that were similarly cased.
This is one such machine. Electrically, it is built like a tank, with large beautifully wound coils and the sort of build quality you would expoect for a device for professional use.
Housed in its original bespoke oak dovetailed box, this machine presents beautifully.
The handset and power cord are stored in the lidded section of the bottom case. The power lead has been hard wired for safety (the original power pins on the face are disconnected).
The machine's output is rheostat controlled, and is adjustable from near zero to very intense. Power is switched by the original switch in the centre of the machine's fascia.
All of the electrodes are tested and functioning, and comprises of a good selection for a machine of this size. Included are (top to bottom):
- Insulated vaginal electrode
- Medium mushroom electrode
- Gum electrode
- Dental hook electrode
- Rake/comb electrode
- Small mushroom electrode
- Cautery electrode
- Rectal electode
- Metal saturator rod electrode (in bottom case and not pictured)
We do not recommend use of the metal saturator rod electrode, and include it only for historic completeness. Any metal electrode should only be used with a spark gap to ensure safety.
This machine uses 12mm electrodes (like many German machines from this period).
This machine is a beautiful piece of working electrical history, and would not be out of place in any collection.
As always, we do not make any representations as to the safety or efficaciousness of the use of this machine if you so choose to do so, and it is sold as curio only (disclaimer).
